Synopsis
She’s a siren, calling me to my ruin. And I just can’t resist her song.
After three tours with the Marines, all I want is to settle into my new, quiet life.
Then, my brother calls to ask a favor—a favor that will change everything.
Carrie Marossi is the opposite of quiet. Not only is she bubbly and outspoken with a larger than life personality, she's gorgeous—absolutely stunning—with a quick wit to rival anyone who dares to challenge her.
She's the kind of woman a man would risk everything for. The kind of woman I had risked everything for.
I told myself never again, but the more time I'm forced to spend by Carrie's side, the harder it is to resist her charm and allure—to resist the passion burning between us... to resist falling under her spell.
And what shakes me to my very core is the realization that saving her life... might just cost me my heart.

The Burkes Series" continues with its second instalment, shifting the focus to Carrie and Dean—respectively the best friend and the brother of the protagonists from the first book. It's romantic suspense and a little bit less murder mystery in this one, but still keeping me wondering,'Who's done it and why' throughout.
In this story, someone is targeting Carrie. While Detective Adam Burke works on gathering enough evidence to build a case, his brother Dean, an ex-Marine, steps in to keep her safe using his skills and experience. While "The Harvester" drew me in with its serial killer plot, this book captivated me through its characters and their emotional journeys.
Dean, the ex-Marine, seeks a quiet life, whereas Carrie is anything but quiet, a true force to be reckoned with. I enjoyed watching Carrie try to understand Dean (while I was figuring him out, too). Dean is a man of few words, but his actions speak volumes. He's not just a protector. He's a giver in every sense. 🥵
"𝙸 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝚜𝚒𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚎 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚞𝚗𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚍.”
Although this is a slow-burn romance, Burnett’s writing makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters, fully immersed in the scenes. The intimate moments are particularly vivid, leaving me blushing as if I were in the room with them. Dean's stamina is book-boyfriend-worthy!
“𝚈𝚘𝚞 𝚖𝚊𝚢 𝚋𝚎 𝚜𝚕𝚢, 𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚝𝚕𝚎 𝚏𝚘𝚡, 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚌𝚊𝚗’𝚝 𝚘𝚞𝚝𝚛𝚞𝚗 𝚊 𝚝𝚒𝚐𝚎𝚛,”
This book revisits some tropes from the first instalment, such as forced proximity, a will-they-won't-they dynamic, and opposites attracting. However, this time, the focus is on Dean's personal growth. Watching a strong man learn to accept his feelings and become vulnerable with Carrie was touching. I felt every high, low, tension, frustration, and attraction.
It was great to see characters from the first book again, providing deeper insights into their lives. Some characters left me hoping they’ll get their own stories in future.
